Selly Park Tavern, Birmingham

Substantial Ember Inn located some distance west of the cricket ground and a bit of an oasis in an otherwise (almost) pub desert. Typical semi-modern furniture and decor in all seating / dining areas, but still retaining some subdivisions so doesn't feel cavernous. Absolutely full on a Wednesday evening, mostly with those eating but also with people there for the regular weekly pub quiz. Although only three of the five handpumps were in use, my pint of Fyne Ales Jarl (£5.00) was in great shape, with Landlord and Tribute also available.

An Ember Inn and decorated and feels as such, the occasional screams of babies can be heard. However, it does manage to balance the chain/family/pub/drinking thing quite well and there are various separate areas and the layout of quite an old building helps the balance. There is a bubbly feel, and its close proximety to the cricket ground also seems to attract business clients. The staff are good, not always the case with big chain pubs and there are three real ales, the quality of which was excellent. Actually a nice place.
