The Farmers Arms, Ormskirk

A simple brick building that has been greatly extended via a conservatory to the rear which overlooks the Leeds and Liverpool Canal,the best part of the interior is in the original building.In through the porch,to the left is a charming snug with it's own fireplace,bench and banquette,a small library of books and a spinning table.Cosy and tucked away.To the right is a low ceiling with a side lounge wrapped around one side of the horseshoe shaped bar. The back of the pub is dominated by the modern conservatory which leads on to a raised dining area.There are handpumps on both sides of the bar and the six were dispensing Tetley's Mild and Bitter,Bass,Moorhouse Pride of Pendle,Prospect One Twenty,while the Black Sheep pump was ,thankfully,not working. Food is a draw here but we did not sample any.Musak was 60's ballards,and the customer base at lunchtime was mainly mature. Although there was nothing wrong with the condition of the beer,as you might expect in a GBG listed house,I thought the selection to be rather dull and the two Wolverhampton brewed Tetley's beers seemed a waste of handpumps.More thought given to ale selection could easily resulted in a higher rating.Slightly frosty reception for the crew until the landlady thought we might be the beer police.
